Skijoring outings

You've done the skijoring course with Liz and now you want to get out there
and have fun with your dog?

I can highly recommend Liz's outings at Ferguson Forest. There are great
trails through the woods, and amazingly, dogs are allowed. Jake and I joined
a group there a few weeks ago and I was thrilled at how well we did. Up
until now Jake has been a rather reluctant "skijorer". He didn't seem to
have the natural instinct to run and pull. He was always quite happy to be
out but to him it was just a romp in the woods, sometimes he was ahead of
me, sometimes by my side, sometimes behind. He didn't quite get the concept.
But something seemed to click with him when we were part of a group. He is
definitely not the lead dog but he settled in quite happily in number two
position, sometimes trotting, sometimes loping along. What a thrill to have
him running ahead of me with a taught line. We had lots of opportunity to
practice the commands, with many corners for geeing and hawing, and some
downhills to work on "easy"; we met a few dog walkers so we were able to
test our "on by's" (need to work on that!).
I for one intend to go on more outings whenever I can, so I hope that you
will come out and join us.
